EQ > IQ for Leaders in 2023

Emotional intelligence, or EQ, has become an increasingly important factor in effective leadership. As we move into 2023, it is crucial for leaders to have a high EQ in order to create a positive and productive work environment. In this post, I’ll explore the importance of EQ in leadership and cite some current data to support it.

First, lets clear something up…..What exactly is EQ?

EQ refers to a person's ability to recognize, understand, and manage their own emotions, as well as the emotions of others. Leaders with high EQ are able to build strong relationships, communicate effectively, and make decisions that benefit both themselves and their team which plays a major role in the success of the business.

Secondly, let’s look at why is EQ important in leadership:

Better communication and collaboration

Leaders with high EQ are able to communicate more effectively and build stronger relationships with their team members. They are able to understand and empathize with their team's emotions, which leads to better collaboration and a more positive work environment. This in a win-win-win.

Increased productivity and employee retention

Leaders with high EQ are able to motivate and inspire their team members, leading to increased productivity and better results. Additionally, employees are more likely to stay with a company that has a positive work environment and a leader who shows empathy and understanding.

Better decision-making

Leaders with high EQ are able to make more informed and effective decisions because they are able to consider the emotions and perspectives of others. This leads to better outcomes and helps to build trust and respect within the team. A leader with a high EQ is able to FEEL their emotions but keep them in check so that they can ultimately serve their team, their clients and the business overall.

There is a lot of current data supporting the importance of EQ in leadership, which admittedly I find so interesting:

  1. A recent study conducted by the Harvard Business Review found that employees who work for a leader with high EQ are more engaged, motivated, and committed to their work.

  2. According to a report by the Center for Creative Leadership, EQ is the most important factor in effective leadership, accounting for 58% of success in all types of jobs.

  3. Another study by the University of Maryland found that leaders with high EQ are able to manage stress more effectively, leading to a healthier work-life balance and better overall performance.

Wrapping up, as we are well on our way into 2023, it is clear that EQ is an essential trait for effective leadership. Leaders with high EQ are able to communicate effectively, build strong relationships, and make better decisions, all of which lead to a more positive and productive work environment. Current data supports the importance of EQ in leadership, and it is crucial for leaders to continue to develop this skill in order to be successful in their roles.
