Can I Lead You & Not Care What You Think of Me?

Take 1min and think about the most impressive artist you’ve ever seen do their “thing” (think musician, painter, dancer, etc.) When they are in “it” do you think they are worrying what you and I think about them? I’d guess, no.

I am incredibly intrigued by the idea of “letting go”… while I don’t always get it right, and it’s a continuous practice (i.e there is no finish line) I wanted to hold some space to look into letting go and leading (effectively).

Research has shown that leaders who prioritize authenticity and integrity over pleasing others tend to be more successful in the long run. In fact, a study by the Harvard Business Review found that leaders who were able to display their authentic selves were more likely to be seen as effective and trustworthy by their team members.

Additionally, a study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that people who are less concerned with what others think of them tend to experience greater levels of happiness and life satisfaction.

So, it's clear that there are benefits to leading with authenticity and without worrying too much about others' opinions. But how can you do this in a way that's practical and actionable? Here are some tips:

  1. Define your values and stick to them. Knowing what you stand for will help you make decisions that are in alignment with your authentic self, rather than being swayed by the opinions of others.

  2. Embrace your quirks and unique qualities. These are the things that make you stand out from the crowd, so don't be afraid to let your personality shine through.

  3. Don't be afraid to make mistakes. Leaders who are too concerned with looking perfect often miss out on valuable learning experiences. Embrace failure as a natural part of the growth process.

  4. Seek feedback, but don't let it define you. It's important to gather input from others, but ultimately you should be the one making the final decision based on your own values and priorities.
